Do You Need to Register for VAT?

vat

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds the UK VAT threshold (currently £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period).

However, many businesses benefit from voluntary registration before reaching the threshold — particularly if:

  • You incur significant start-up costs
  • Your customers are VAT-registered businesses
  • You want to improve business credibility
  • You operate in construction or e-commerce

We review your turnover, business model, and future plans to advise on the right timing and structure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): VAT Services in the UK

Below are answers to the most common questions regarding Value Added Tax specifically for businesses operating within or trading with the United Kingdom.

What is the current VAT registration threshold in the UK?

As of April 1, 2024, the VAT registration threshold in the UK is £90,000. If your taxable turnover exceeds this amount in a rolling 12-month period, you must register for VAT with HMRC. You must also register if you expect your turnover to go over this threshold in the next 30 days alone.

Yes, you can. Voluntary registration is common for smaller businesses. The main benefit is that it allows you to reclaim VAT charged on your business expenses (input tax). However, once registered, you must charge VAT on your sales and file regular returns, so it is a trade-off between administrative work and financial gain.

There are three primary rates you need to be aware of:

  • Standard Rate (20%): Applies to most goods and services.
  • Reduced Rate (5%): Applies to specific items such as children’s car seats and home energy.
  • Zero Rate (0%): Applies to essential items like most food, books, newspapers, and children’s clothes. Note that “zero-rated” is different from “exempt”; you can still reclaim input VAT on zero-rated sales.

Making Tax Digital is a UK government initiative to modernize the tax system. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and use MTD-compatible software to submit their VAT returns. You can no longer log in to the HMRC website and manually type in your figures; the data must be sent digitally via software.

This is a major anti-fraud measure. If you are in the construction industry (CIS), you generally do not charge VAT to other VAT-registered contractors. Instead, the customer (the contractor) accounts for the VAT on their own return. This prevents “missing trader” fraud. It is crucial to check if your services fall under this rule to avoid incorrect invoicing.

If you are an overseas seller with no physical presence in the UK, the £90,000 threshold does not apply to you. You must register for UK VAT as soon as you make your first taxable supply (sale) to a UK customer, unless the sale is facilitated by an online marketplace (OMP) that is responsible for collecting the tax.

Yes. If you have paid VAT to HMRC on a sale but your customer has not paid you, you can claim “Bad Debt Relief.” Generally, the debt must be more than six months old and written off in your accounts before you can reclaim the VAT portion.

HMRC operates a points-based penalty system for late submissions. If you miss a deadline, you receive a penalty point. Once you reach a certain threshold of points, you will be charged a financial penalty (usually £200). There are also separate penalties and interest charges for late payments.

The Flat Rate Scheme is designed to simplify VAT for small businesses (turnover £150,000 or less). Instead of calculating the VAT difference between every sale and purchase, you pay a fixed percentage of your gross turnover to HMRC. You keep the difference between what you charge your customers (20%) and the flat rate you pay HMRC. However, you generally cannot reclaim VAT on purchases (except for certain capital assets over £2,000).

Simply contact our team via the form below. We will conduct an initial assessment of your turnover and business model to determine your immediate obligations and how we can assist you in remaining compliant with HMRC.
